I recently tacked a slipcover for my sofa which actually was only a couple of years old, but I had not been pleased with how the fabric was not holding up. I would have expected more from a Bernhardt sofa, but oh well. I had a white slipcovered sofa some years ago and loved it so much. However, after getting married and such, we sold that sofa to move on to another…and then another…and then this one.
I had only done two other chair slipcovers in the past. I have only sewn the most minor things…and when I say minor….I’m telling you that I am a very newbie sewer for the most part. But I do have an knack for such things. Add that to LOTS of patience and perseverance….and trust me, you could do such a project too. I suppose I could add those images of before and after for those two projects later. But for now, I wanted to share this transformation for which I am so terribly pleased. I used a cotton, acrylic and linen blend fabric which seems a lot like a medium weight denim. I shall post a handful of helpful things that I learned along the way on this project later. There are so many. The best teacher is experience and making lots of mistakes and redoing things several times before getting them as you want, but in the end, learning is great and very enjoyable. The big perk is the next project should be pretty darn easy, right? I did change the pillows on this sofa and I added TWO inches to the bottom cushions. Clearly they needed it. What do you think?
The entire project was not really budget friendly. I splurged on the fabric and purchased a new sewing machine and serger along the way. hehe. However, it could have been much less expensive. I also repainted that back wall and removed the curtains for a much more light and airy look. Please excuse the terrible cell phone pics, but you can clearly see the transformation and that’s what matters. 😉
